How to apply for a visitor visa to Norway from Thailand

The order of the steps decides whether the application runs smoothly or stalls. Here is the whole route, from registration to submission at VFS in Bangkok.

A visitor visa (Schengen visa, type C) allows a stay of up to 90 days within 180 days. You apply BEFORE the trip, and the applicant is the person in Thailand — not the host in Norway.

The order that actually works

• Check that the passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned return, with at least two blank pages.
• Register the application in the UDI application portal and pay the fee there.
• Book an appointment with VFS Global in Bangkok. Slots fill up in high season — book as soon as the application is registered.
• Gather the documents. This is the part people underestimate.
• Attend the appointment for fingerprints and photo. If you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, you may be exempt.

The documents that decide the case

The case officer needs to answer two questions: can you afford the trip, and will you go home again? Everything you submit should point at one of them.

• Completed and signed application form
• Passport photo to Schengen standard
• Travel insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 across the Schengen area
• Flight reservation — a reservation, not a purchased ticket
• Proof of where you will stay
• Proof of funds for the stay, stamped by the bank
• Sponsor form if someone in Norway is covering the costs

What ties you to Thailand

This is the most important bundle, and the one most often missing. Employment contract and payslips. A letter from your employer confirming you have a job to return to. If you own property or land, bring the title deed. If you have children in school in Thailand, bring the confirmation.

An application without ties to the home country is the most common reason for refusal. Having enough money does not help if nothing suggests you will go home.

How long it takes

Expect several weeks from submission to decision, longer in high season. Apply well ahead, and never buy a ticket you cannot cancel before the visa is granted.
